AI09 Day 2

Aeroplan Saves The Day
byJeff Melanson, NBS' Executive Director & Co-CEO

What a week! I have had the great pleasure of being immersed in the arts world for much of my last twenty years. I have seen thousands of performances and I have had the unique privilege to work with musicians and dancers from all around the world. It would be very safe to say that this week's experience at NBS is truly the most extraordinary of my life. It is hard to believe that all of this almost did not come to pass...

About one year ago, Mavis and I sat down to review our budgets and forecasts. The world was in the midst of a terrible economic freefall and our immediate future seemed uncertain. During this meeting, we discussed whether NBS could manage the Assemblee in this economic context.

While we tried to brainstorm an impossible solution together (an all too common aspect of our working relationship), Mavis suggested approaching an airline for sponsorship. As it happened, I had met Rupert Duschenes, CEO of Aeroplan, a few weeks before. I approached Rupert and told him that this incredible event would be cancelled without his support. Unbelievably, Rupert stepped up and created a dynamic partnership with our donor community in which miles raised by NBS through donations would be accompanied by miles from Aeroplan itself.

Simply put, this event would not have been possible without Aeroplan. We cannot acknowledge or thank Rupert, Alden and the Aeroplan team enough.

AI09 Day 2

Uniforms at the Assemblée Internationale
by Katharine Harris, NBS' Media Relations & Communications Officer

It’s Day Two of NBS’ Assemblée Internationale, and everyone is settling into the AI rhythm. Each day begins the same for all our participating students, with ballet class from 10:00-11:30 am.  Then, after a quick break, students head into the first rehearsal period from 11:45am-1:00 pm.  Following a lunch break, the second rehearsal period is 2:15-4:15 pm. Then, depending on the day, all students have dress rehearsals or performances.

Walking through the Celia Franca Studios this morning, I caught glimpses of the nine different ballet classes happening simultaneously. It’s so exciting to see ballet students from around the world all learning and working together in one studio, from such an array of amazing ballet teachers.

One of the things I found most fun this morning was trying to guess where each student was from.  It was easy to spot the students from NBS, as they wear a uniform even when in studio. The boys wear grey tights and white tops, while the girls wear white or pink tights and leotards of teal, navy blue or maroon. Trying to figure out where all the other students was from was almost like a game. The girls from Ecole de Danse de l’Opéra national de Paris wear leotards of different colours, but their skirts are attached to the bodysuits. The boys from Hamburg wear shorts, while the boys from The Royal Ballet School wear all black unitards. The girls from The Royal Ballet School wear red leotards with short, cap sleeves. The Cuban girls all wear gorgeous little roses in their hair. Earlier today, I was also relying on the warmups and extra layers everyone was wearing; everytime I saw an NBS shirt or NBS pants, I knew they were NBS students. Now, as the visiting students settle into their time here, they’ve purchased NBS sweats, so everyone is starting to look like one big, happy group of dancers!

I can’t wait to see how the rest of the week plays out!
