“The fact that they could all take class together, doing the same steps, and all while letting their own style show through, is what I found truly amazing about today.”

The coming together of all of these schools of dance officially began on the weekend of the 29-30th of April, however the grade nine class had been given the weekend off. For those of us who either don’t live in residence or were able to go home on the weekend, it was not until Monday morning that we finally found ourselves in the midst of this exciting event.

The Assemblée Internationale had, of course, been the topic of much discussion and activity around the school for quite some time prior to it actually starting. We had, as a class, discussed and even looked at the various styles and “trademarks” of the various schools, and had been told many times of the enormity of the event. Somehow though, none of this really hit me until I saw it with my own eyes on Monday when I arrived for class.

Everywhere you looked, there were new faces from all over the world, all here to share their styles of dance. There were people I had never heard of before, and famous directors and teachers who I just couldn’t believe I was in the same building with. Every hallway on every floor seamed to be lined with dancers looking in at the classes, or preparing for their own classes together with new friends who might have come from halfway across the world.

After having our own class, and finding our way through the maze of crowded hallways, we sat down to watch a class of male dancers from among other places; Canada, England, France, Denmark, and the Netherlands. The class and the dancers taking it were nothing short of amazing. It was interesting to see how each school had their own specialties and strengths, so much so, that while watching them you could tell which school they were from, but not enough so that having them dance together was strange or awkward.

The fact that they could all take class together, doing the same steps, and all while letting their own style show through, is what I found truly amazing about today. But, that is I suppose, what is so special about ballet, and what the Assemblée Internationale is there to show us.
