This March, Canada’s National Ballet School will transcend time and culture to present the truly unique, neo-vintage theme of Steampunk.

…but, WHAT IS STEAMPUNK?

Steampunk is a subgenre of current science fiction and fantasy literature that incorporates technology and designs inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery.

THE TOP 10 THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT STEAMPUNK

1. Reimagining the Victorian era
Steampunk is a reimagining of the Victorian era, specifically through technology that did not exist at that time. It’s modern technology – computers, cell phones, robotics, air travel – but powered by steam and set in the 1800’s

2. Jules Verne & H.G. Wells
Today’s Steampunk writers are inspired by Jules Verne and H. G. Wells, who dominated the literary genre in the 19th century, imagining amazing things that could exist with innovative technological advances and what life would have been like if they had been possible.

3. Innovative technology
Some popular Steampunk inventions and gadgets include aviator goggles, lights and lanterns, pocket watches, mechanical jewelry, accessories and communication devices.

4. Steampunk is art
Steampunk today inspires artists in media, literature, fashion, music and ‘makerism’. People invent machines, create sculptures out of old machine parts, and rework the Victorian fashions into modern apparel.

5. Uptown ‘Punk’
‘Punk’ usually paints the picture of rebelling youth, but Steampunk draws on the spirit of optimism and romanticism that was so prevalent in the Victorian era. The ‘punk’ suffix refers to the innovation of the day, pushing the boundaries of science and the social order.

6. Steampunk is deconstructive by nature
It turns the culture and history of the Victorian Era inside out. Corsets are worn on the outside in women’s fashion, the inner-workings of gadgets are usually visible from the outer layer, and the unique dreams and ideas of individuals are outwardly expressed for all to re-imagine.

7. There are no rules to Steampunk fashion
Steampunk fashion is inspired by Victorian era, yes, but beyond that it’s about creating an outfit that is elegant with a touch of whimsy – a corset style dress, ruffled skirt, or a sprinkling of Steampunk accessories, like a hair feather, or mechanical-inspired jewelry. There are lots of examples on the NBS Steampunk Gala website.

8. Steampunk is a global phenomenon
In recent years, Steampunk has become an international movement with a diverse global community. Whether online or at festivals, collaboration continually drives new imagery, style and innovative creations across all media.

9. Aspirational & Inspirational
Steampunk is constantly in search of a way to bring society to the next level and make a better future through technology, innovation and self-expression, which is why it is the perfect theme for our 2016 Gala Fundraiser.

10. Canada’s National Ballet School embodies Steampunk
NBS is driven by a passion to help all Canadians experience the benefits of dance, and continues to discover, innovate and inspire every day through both the Professional and Community programming.
