Since September 2014, Canada's National Ballet School (NBS) has been working with Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities to give underserved kids in the Toronto community access to healthy, fun and creative dance activities through our Sharing Dance program. The program started with 4 classes of students in Grades 3 -6 at Church Street Public School, and 4 classes of students in Grades 3-5 at Rose Avenue Public School. This fall, we are expanding the program to include St. Martin de Porres Catholic School in Toronto, and in 2016 our goal is to bring Sharing Dance to several schools in Winnipeg, with one of our National Partners, Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet School leading the way.

NBS staff work with the schools’ teachers to take elements of what the students are learning in the classroom, and combine it with dance in an educational but also engaging way. We make dance easy to learn, accessible, and above all, lots of fun.

The inactivity of kids in Canada is a growing concern, and we need to provide all children with equal opportunities to discover the various ways they can make physical activity a part of their lifestyles. Dance offers people of all ages a creative and enjoyable way to get more active. Through our partnership with Jumpstart, we aim to give kids who might not otherwise have the chance an opportunity to experience dance. Working together, we will continue to expand the program and help children across the country rediscover the joy of dance and movement in daily life.
