Spring Showcase

May 27-29, 2010

Since 1959, our Spring Showcase has been a renowned annual performance tradition at NBS, a mainspring performance vehicle for the students in the School's full-time Professional Ballet Program. Presenting captivating dance and celebrating leading choreographers with the community, this highly anticipated event embraces some of the most well-known classical and modern ballets of all time.

Details of the 2009/2010 Spring Showcase will be announced soon, so check back for updates!

NOTICE: A one year postponement of David Allan's choreographic piece. NBS alumnus and internationally respected choreographer, David Allan and Canada's National Ballet School have mutually agreed to postpone Mr. Allan's creation of a new ballet by one year – from 2009/10 to 2010/11.

Mr. Allan recently underwent major spine surgery and now must honour his recuperation needs. While Mr. Allan is deeply disappointed not to be creating a new work to celebrate NBS' 50th anniversary, as originally planned, he is very much looking forward to working with NBS students twelve months from now, when he is fully recovered.

Stephen Godfrey Choreographic Workshop

The Stephen Godfrey Choreographic Workshop was named in May 1993 in memory of Stephen Godfrey, the late Globe and Mail journalist who was an avid supporter of Canada's National Ballet School.

An annual event, the Stephen Godfrey Choreographic Workshop provides senior NBS students (Grade 9 and above) the opportunity to develop their choreographic skills. Throughout the creative process the student choreographers work with the School's professional artistic staff to experience every aspect of creating a new work. The stage manager, wardrobe supervisor and lighting designer, along with a mentor from the dance faculty, guide each student through the development of their creative contribution.

Assemblée Internationale 2009

From November 15 – 21, 2009, Canada's National Ballet School played host to an international choreographic festival. Students from 12 participating schools participated in the first-ever Assemblée Internationale 2009 (AI09), celebrating student choreography and the art of dance.

Each school performed two works: one, a traditional dance piece of their choosing; the second work created by a student, performed by a group composed of students from each of the partner schools.

A forum was also held for the Artistic Directors of the partner schools and other invited guests to discuss the evolution of ballet education, and methods of strengthening its relevance and ensuring the vibrancy of its community.

Following the festival, students, teachers and invited guests participated in a one-day long Ideas Exchange/Student Forum, spotlighting ways in which current and emerging practitioners would like to see the art form and professional practices evolve.

Open Stage

Every December, our Post-Secondary Program students perform an Open Stage series. In 2009, the repertoire included excerpts from Forgotten Land (Kylian), solo from Bongo Bongo (Forsythe), Improvisation AI09 (Amyot) and the premiere of a new work by NBS' own Rob Binet!

Don't miss this opportunity to see NBS' talented students take the stage!

The Nutcracker

Now in its 15th year, each December, more than 200 students from both Canada's National Ballet School and Toronto-area high schools participate inthe National Ballet of Canada's acclaimed The Nutcracker at Toronto's Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts.

This tradition serves to remind us all of how uniting the holiday spirit is. Collaboration and celebration through creativity and performance truly represent the spirit of this holiday season. - Mavis Staines, Co-CEO & Artistic Director

Looking for Our Sugar Plum Fair?

This year we are focusing our fundraising efforts on three signature events – Grand Pas de Deux Gala (February 7, 2009); Spring Showcase (May 19, 2009); and our Golf Classic (June 16, 2009) – while we prepare for our 50th Anniversary beginning September 29, 2009. Thus, we are taking the Sugar Plum Fair off our event calendar.

Fête d’Or: Our 50th Anniversary Gala

For our 50th anniversary year, we celebrated with a theme of Fête d’Or or "gold celebration." It was a golden evening of festivities in honour of Joan & Jerry Lozinski, Patrons of the Arts, & Mavis Staines, NBS' Artistic Director.
