Billy Elliot Comes to Toronto

Mirvish Productions have officially announced they will be presenting Billy Elliot: the Musical in Toronto in February 2011. This is exciting news for NBS, as our students Liam Redhead and Caesar Corrales are starring in the Broadway and Chicago productions, respectively. All major newspapers included great quotes about NBS in their Billy Elliot stories:

"There is something extraordinary about the children here," Stephen Daldry, the show's director, said. "Its due undoubtedly to the National Ballet School and the amount of ballet training, but there's something about the determination and the tenacity and the support that they are getting in this country that has allowed us to cast possibly more Canadian children than from anywhere else in the world."
– The National Post

"I've also found the National Ballet School to be open, warm, generous and appreciative, which would make it a marvellous partner for us if we mounted the show here," Daldry added.
– The Toronto Star

"Casting won't happen for the Toronto show for several months yet and though the show's creative team will cast an international net, they will look hard at Canadian talent, particularly the strong boys emerging from the National Ballet School and Royal Winnipeg Ballet School."
– The Globe and Mail

NBS Alumni Perform at the Winter Games Opening Ceremony

NBS alumni showcased athleticism and artistry as part of the Opening Ceremony at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games. Alumni including Reilley Bell, Mark Dennis, Gailen Johnston, Mariko Kondo, Kealan McLaughlin, and Blair Puente danced to Jean Grand-Maître's choreography as Canadian Sarah McLachlan sang one of her signature songs, Ordinary Miracle.

Congratulations alumni – we could not be more proud!

NOW: Peggy Baker says goodbye to dance... but not performance

February 17, 2010

Mention the name Peggy Baker to anyone who loves dance and their eyes will widen, they'll try to recall their favourite work and eventually, as if describing a trip to one of the wonders of the world, they'll say two words: "Those arms."
