Codarts is a small-scale international university for the arts (with a total of around 1,000 students) established in Rotterdam, Netherlands, offering high quality education in the fields of music, dance and circus.

The dance department of Codarts (called Rotterdam Dance Academy until just recently) was founded in 1931 by Corrie Hartong and Gertrud Leistikow. It has developed into one of the most prominent institutes for contemporary dance in Europe. The dance department has around 200 students (representing about 30 nationalities) in the professional study programs – Bachelor of Dance, Bachelor of Dance in Education and Master in Dance Therapy – and almost 200 pupils in the preparatory courses (for dance talents from nine years old).

Artistic Manager of the Bachelor of Dance study program, Caroline Harder says, “It is our mission to train the future world top of self-aware dance artists in our study program, by giving a solid foundation of contemporary dance skills and developing a clear vision of the student’s own talent.

“We only accept the greatest talents into our Bachelor of Dance program. From the hundreds of dancers who apply to us for an audition from all over the world every year, we only select a few dozen talented candidates. We give them an optimal preparation for a career as a dancer. A solid dance technique foundation is the necessary basis for this. Our education is strongly practice-oriented and is characterized by striving for a rich content and a balance between artistry and craftsmanship.

“As well as our own top teachers, there are always dance professionals from home and abroad at work in our studios, as guest teachers or choreographers. Our students build up plenty of stage experience during their study – through performances, theatre tours and festivals, and through internships with renowned companies, with whom we have close links. In addition, students can make use of exchange programs with other prominent institutes in Europe and the USA.”
