The Nationale Balletacademie (Dutch National Ballet Academy) is the Netherland’s top national school for classical ballet. It is part of De Theaterschool, one of the faculties of the Amsterdam School of the Arts. De Theaterschool encompasses fourteen courses of higher professional education (HBO) in dance, theatre and scenography, technical theatre arts and production.

The Dutch National Ballet Academy is affiliated to the world-renowned, Het Nationale Ballet (Dutch National Ballet).

The Dutch National Ballet Academy aims to provide the highest level of training for aspiring young dancers to equip them with the skills to obtain positions within the Dutch National Ballet and other top international companies. The Dutch National Ballet Academy endeavours to set the highest of standards at the forefront of dance training and provide students with a safe, caring and stimulating environment wherein they will attain their full potential as a dancer, artist and human being.

Christopher Powney, Artistic Director

Christopher Powney has danced with many leading international dance companies including The English National Ballet and Rambert Dance Company. During his career he has performed and created many leading roles and worked with numerous prominent choreographers and artists, among them, Twyla Tharp, Lynne Seymour, Frederick Franklin, Christopher Gable, Frederick Franklin, Ohad Naharin, Glen Tetley, Rudolf Nureyev, Christopher Bruce and Jiri Kylian.

During his dance career, Christopher Powney turned his focus to teaching, having qualified with the Royal Ballet’s Professional Dancers Teacher’s Course. He was Assistant Artistic Director of the Central School of Ballet’s graduate touring company and has had many years of international teaching experience. In 2000, he joined the teaching staff of the Royal Ballet’s Upper School. In 2006 he was invited to take on the position of graduate teacher with the dance department of the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague.

Powney has also taught at the Monaco Dance Forum, been a member of the board for the British Association of Performing Arts Medicine and was a jury member of the 2011 Prix de Lausanne competition. In September 2010, he was appointed artistic director of the Dutch National Ballet Academy.
