July 1, 2013 marked the 25th anniversary of Mavis Staines as Artistic Director at NBS. In NBS' 50+ years, the School has had two Artistic Directors; Betty Oliphant 1959 – 1988 and Mavis Staines. Please join us in congratulating Mavis on her first 25 years as Artistic Director!
Patrick Foster Exchange Students
This summer, NBS students Patrick Foster and Théa Barnwell were both on exchange at international dance schools. Patrick was thrilled to spend 6 weeks dancing at the Alvin Ailey School in New York City, while Théa was at the Semperoper Ballett in Dresden. Read about their experiences.
Professional Ballet students Professional Ballet & Teacher Training Programs
Residence for Professional Ballet Program students opens on Monday, September 2, and classes begin again on Tuesday, September 3. The Teacher Training Program Orientation Day is Tuesday, September 3, and classes start on Wednesday, September 4.
Adult Ballet students Community Programs
The Associates Program Orientation Day for new and returning students is Saturday, September 7, with classes starting up again on Monday, September 9. Stay tuned for schedules. Teacher Training Program Dance Teacher Training Information Day
Those interested in becoming a classically trained ballet teacher are invited to our inaugural Teacher Training Program Day (TTP Day) at NBS on Saturday, September 28. Students will have an opportunity to learn about our specialized post-secondary program for dance pedagogy, with a focus on the teaching of classical ballet. 2013/14 National Audition Tour National Audition Tour dates announced
Each fall NBS artistic staff travel across the country, holding Open Classes and Auditions as part of our annual National Audition Tour, and we're thrilled that once again, the Tour will be presented by Sun Life Financial. Check out the dates and locations. Registration will open September 10.
Cheryl Belkin Epstein Cineplex Front Row Centre Ballet Series
The ballet film series begins again in September. The Bolshoi's Swan Lake in 3D is showing on September 18 and 22. NBS' Cheryl Belkin Epstein will once again provide a video introduction to the live-streamed productions – check the full schedule.
Dancing for Parkinson's Dancing with Parkinson's at NBS
NBS is looking for volunteers to participate in a pilot program for people with Parkinson's Disease. Beginning in September, classes will be held once a week for 12 weeks on Tuesday mornings. A research study is also planned for interested participants. Learn more...

Culture Days Culture Days
NBS is once again participating in Culture Days, a weekend-long festival offering free, participatory arts events across Canada! Join us on Saturday, September 28 and Sunday, September 29 for the chance to watch our students in class as well as the option to learn ballet, urban dance or Bollywood yourselves! Creative Dance for the Very Young Creative Dance for the Very Young
Mary Ann Lee, Director of the Virginia Tanner Creative Dance Program and the Children's Dance Theatre at the University of Utah will give a demonstration class and workshop on Sunday, October 27, 10am-1pm. All dance teachers are welcome to register, fee $65. Learn more or register online.
