Canada's National Ballet School's Annual Gala
In March 2020, NBS’ annual gala—responsible for raising 40% of the School’s fundraising needs—was cancelled as a result of COVID-19. Though this was disappointing, the response of NBS’ donor community was amazing; many would-be guests honoured their pledges, and others kept in constant contact, eager for the next opportunity to help.
Since then, as public health guidelines continued to be of the highest importance, it became clear that NBS should not expect to host in-person events during the 2020/21 school year. And yet, we had so much to share! Professional Ballet-Academic Students transitioned to at-home, virtual training for many months, and then returned to NBS’ studios. Collaborations with a diverse range of artists broadened and deepened thanks, in part, to the flexibility of digital technology. And staff and students spearheaded new initiatives to spotlight and advance equity, diversity and inclusion in dance.
But this was also clear: more than ever, we had a responsibility to ensure that—whatever the moment in history—we empower the next generation of leading artists to pursue their dreams. Students and their families experienced new levels of uncertainty, instability and anxiety. Our guiding belief that financial circumstance should never be a barrier for passionate young dancers only deepened.
This is why, we’ve developed a brand new initiative, perfectly suited to this very moment.
A special journey of perseverance, passion, and sharing the power of dance like never before.
