Grade 12 Professional Ballet Program Graduation
June 20 saw the graduating class of 2014 receive their diplomas from Mavis Staines, Artistic Director and Neil Walsh, Academic Principal. In addition to the Academic Awards presented, the following Ballet Awards were given to:
  • Zoe Michalik – Jeffrey Kirk Award
  • Manuel Garrido Luceno – Lawrence Haskett Scholarship Award
  • Jasmine Deleary-McDonald – NBS Special Ballet Staff Award
  • Spencer Hack – Jeff Melanson Prize
  • Hailey Hamblin – Erik Bruhn Memorial Award
  • Jimmy Coleman – Christopher Ondaatje Ballet Prize

Teacher Training Graduation
On June 12, ten Teacher Training Program students graduated in the Betty Oliphant Theatre in front of parents, family, friends and staff. The Betty Oliphant Award was presented to Cheng-ni Ho, while the Carol Chadwick Award was given to Kayla Hanson, and the Sylvia M. McPhee Award was presented to Gerard McIsaac. Congratulations to the class of 2014! Please keep in touch.
Summer School begins!
Beginning the week of July 1, NBS welcomes students and Artistic staff to its four week long Summer School program. PBP students will spend their July dancing while auditioning students will see what it’s like to experience dance in a relaxed, camp-like atmosphere. Welcome to all!
Student Exchange at NBS
A total of 24 NBS students from Grades 10 through PSP will be visiting partner schools throughout Europe, the US and Australia this summer for a new dance experience. Meanwhile, NBS will be welcoming 31 international students from 10 different countries in North America, Europe and Asia to its Summer School.

This is the last chance to observe NBS students in class this school year. Summer School offers the unique opportunity to see our full-time professional, auditioning and exchange students refining their technique and training together. A benefit for donors $250+. Stephen Godfrey Choreographic Workshop
Thursday, July 24, 7:30 pm

Original works created and performed by talented senior NBS students. The workshop is named in memory of the late Stephen Godfrey, a journalist with The Globe and Mail and long-time NBS supporter. School Lane Naming Ceremony
On June 5th, NBS joined Toronto Centre-Rosedale Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam, the Church Wellesley Neighbourhood Association, and community members for the ‘School Lane’ Name Unveiling Ceremony. ‘School Lane,’ located just off Mutual Street and Wood Street, was named to celebrate the long history of schools in our community and their key role in educating our children.
Ideas Exchange 2014: Professional Development for Dance Teachers - July 15-18
UPDATED NEWS: Sergiu Stefanschi, internationally renowned teacher and NBS Faculty member, will lead a workshop focused on the use of Ports de Bras in classical ballet. This will be in addition to Sorella Englund's work with teachers focused on developing expression and artistry in dance class. Don’t miss this opportunity, Register now. Also, Professional Development hours will provide a credit, with a certificate available at the end of the course.
Adult Ballet
Registration for our 2014/2015 season will open to our Adult Ballet Contact List July 30. Sign onto the ABCL to receive early bird registration news and register one week before the public.
Student Council for 2014-15
The incoming student council has been selected from the graduating class of 2015 and we welcome the following students in their new roles: President: Lauren Janeway; Social Director: Emily Stewart; Donations Director: Olga Vayner; Secretary: Kayla Fitzpatrick, and Treasurer Emily Mittelstaedt.

NBS’ bi-annual newsletter, To the Pointe, will move to a Summer and Winter publication cycle. Look for the next issue to drop this Summer.
Culture Days at NBS, September 27 - 28
NBS will once again be taking part in Culture Days this year! We will be offering observation classes in the Betty Oliphant Theatre on Saturday, September 27 and a variety of ballet classes for children and adults on Sunday, September 28. Registration for classes will open later this summer. Check the Culture Days site for more details.
Scotiabank Nuit Blanche
NBS is thrilled to partner with Peggy Baker Dance Projects on their fourth Scotiabank Nuit Blanche dance installation, The Perfect Word, taking place in the Betty Oliphant Theatre on October 4 & 5. Congratulations to Peggy on being selected as an independent project! Stay tuned for more details.
