Guest Teacher, Choreographer, & Repetiteur
Robert Stephen is a Canadian choreographer, dancer and teacher.
He graduated from NBS’ Professional Ballet Program in 2003, and from the Intensive Dance Program (now CLP) the following year. He joined the National Ballet of Canada in 2004 and danced with the company for fourteen years, earning a promotion to First Soloist in 2011. During this time, he also gained recognition as a choreographer, winning the Audience Choice Award at the Erik Bruhn Competition and the Clifford E. Lee Choreography Award from the Banff Centre. In 2018, he spent two years abroad with Gauthier Dance/Dance Company Theaterhaus Stuttgart, performing works by Ohad Naharin, Hofesh Shechter and William Forsythe.
Since his return to Canada in 2020, Robert has taken on several roles as a member of NBS’ Artistic Staff: first as guest contemporary dance teacher, followed by two years as full-time ballet teacher and assistant coordinator of the Company Life Program, and now in his current role as guest ballet teacher, choreographer, and repetiteur. His works have been presented in NBS’ Spring Showcase (Boundless, 2022), and in numerous performances for supporters, parents, and CLP. Since 2021, he has also been commissioned by Ballet Kelowna to choreograph three new works, including the evening-length story ballet Mustard in 2024.
