NBS Sharing Dance

Celebrate the joy, creativity and community of dance

Each year, Canada’s National Ballet School commissions a Canadian artist to create a piece of choreography that embodies a thoughtful theme.

This year's choreography features an adapted excerpt of The Call, created by artists Esie Mensah and Robert Binet. The Call was originally created for NBS’ Professional Ballet Program students, and we are thrilled that a wider audience can now experience the beauty and power of this piece. The Call, invites you to imagine a future where dance is an essential element of our cultural conversation; a world where tension can be resolved through movement. Combining Afrofusion and Ballet, The Call challenges and celebrates our ability to communicate through dance.

The choreography is divided into sections and taught through step-by-step video resources, adapted for all ages with a seated choreography option for each section. Whether you’re learning the full piece or just an excerpt, use the choreography to learn about dance in a fun, physical and artistic way and foster a love for dance individually or as a group.

The choreography builds towards NBS Sharing Dance Day, a nationwide dance party bringing together tens of thousands of people in communities across the country. NBS Sharing Dance started as a flashmob in Toronto in 2010 and has grown over the years into an incredible celebration of the joy, creativity and community of dance from coast-to-coast-to-coast.

A broadcast of Sharing Dance Day will not be taking place this year, but we invite you to join in the Sharing Dance Celebrations by learning this year’s choreography with your classroom and members of your community! Use the choreography to learn about dance in a fun, physical and artistic way, while fostering new relationships together.

Our free resources can be implemented with minimal equipment and space. For additional support on how you can bring Sharing Dance Celebrations to your community, reach out to sharingdance@nbs-enb.ca.
