Takeshi Watanabe
Ballet Staff; Young Dancers Program
Born and raised in Tokyo, Japan. Takeshi trained at K-Ballet School (Japan), Central School of Ballet (London, UK), and graduated from Elmhurst Ballet School where he had the opportunity to perform with the Birmingham Royal Ballet in several productions.
Upon graduation, he then joined the Polish National Ballet under the directorship of Krzysztof Pastor where he danced for ten years. His wide range of repertoire includes works by renowned choreographers such as John Neumeier, William Forsythe, John Cranko, George Balanchine, Jirí Kylián, Maurice Béjart, Wayne McGregor, Frederick Ashton and Kenneth MacMillan.
After moving to Toronto, he completed the Teacher Training Program for Former Professional Dancers at Canada’s National Ballet School with distinction and received the prestigious Betty Oliphant Award.
He currently teaches in the Professional Ballet Program and the Young Dancers Program at NBS and rehearsals for the children’s cast of the National Ballet of Canada’s “The Nutcracker”.
Takeshi is passionate about sharing his love of ballet and hopes to help each student achieve their goals through both physical and mental discipline. He is also a certified comprehensive Pilates instructor through BASI Pilates and enjoys incorporating his Pilates knowledge into his ballet teaching.
Fun Facts About Me:
What do you do in your free time? I like going for walks and get a coffee and pastry from a cafe. Also enjoy having dinner parties at home with family and friends.
Bucket list item: Not an item, but would love to travel more. I've been to 35 countries so far and counting!
What is your favourite travel destination? London, UK! where I used to live. I love the architecture, the West end, my friends and of course, Sunday roast!
