Choose your audition pathway! Auditions are entry requirements for the following NBS programs:

  • Intensive Ballet stream of the part-time Young Dancers Program (ages 9-17)

  • Professional Ballet-Academic Program (Grades 6-12)

  • Company Life Program (Post-Secondary)

  • Teacher Training Program (Post-Secondary)

Audition for our Professional Ballet Program

Prepare for a career on the world stage!


Our Professional Ballet-Academic Program and Company Life Program offer Olympic-calibre training that prepares dancers for a dynamic career in dance companies around the world. Our annual auditions are offered in-person and online, welcoming students from across Canada and worldwide. During their audition, all dancers will experience a class with a live musician and NBS’ renowned teachers. 

 

The audition process takes place in two stages:

  • Stage One: Audition in-person or online.  Students who have successfully auditioned may be invited to join Summer School, from July 4 – 28, as stage two of the audition process.

  • Stage Two: Attend Summer School. Students who have successfully auditioned will be invited to join the full-time Professional Ballet Program for the 2023/24 school year.

 

Auditions for 2023/2024 are now closed. Stay tuned for information regarding auditions for 2024/2025 in the fall.

 

Please note: dancers may only participate in one NBS audition per school year.

 

Register for a Professional Ballet-Academic Program Audition

As the only school in North America to offer Olympic-calibre dance training, academic instruction and residential care all on one campus, our Professional Ballet-Academic Program is home to students in grades 6 to 12 from across Canada and around the world. Professional Ballet-Academic Program Auditions are open to students entering grades 6 to 12 in September 2023. Prior dance training is not essential for children under 12 years of age. *Auditions now closed*

Register for a Company Life Program Audition

The Company Life Program is a post-secondary program that provides students the opportunity to experience the intensity and rigours of life in a dance company while still within the supportive environment of an educational program. This program is designed for students who have completed high school in a rigorous full-time dance program who wish to prepare for professional careers. *Auditions are now closed.*

Audition for the Teacher Training Program

For more than 40 years, NBS has been successfully training teachers, ballet masters and artistic directors who now hold posts in schools and companies across Canada and around the world. 

 

As a TTP student, you will:

Stage One: Audition online. This audition will consist of an hour long intermediate level ballet class followed by a meeting with the Teacher Training Program Manager. Students who have successfully auditioned will be invited to join stage two of the audition process.

 

Stage Two: Attend the Assessment Seminar. This involves a two day seminar in the Spring. Candidates will have classes in classical ballet, pointe work, repertoire, character, music, creative dance/drama, and personal interviews with NBS staff. Students who have successfully auditioned will be invited to join the full-time Teacher Training Program. 

  • Online Audition: $70

  • Assessment Seminar: $350

 

Three Year Diploma

Stage Two: Attend the Assessment Seminar. This involves a two day seminar in the Spring. Candidates will have classes in classical ballet, pointe work, repertoire, character, music, creative dance/drama, and personal interviews with NBS staff. Students who have successfully auditioned will be invited to join the full-time Teacher Training Program.

Professional Dancers Program

Audition Fees

  • 18+

  • High School Diploma

  • At least five years’ experience in a classically based company

Stage One: Contact the Teacher Training Program Artistic Administrator to express your interest. You may be asked to attend an interview with the Teacher Training Program Manager.

 

Stage Two: Teach an intermediate/advanced level ballet class to be assessed by the Teacher Training Program Manager. This can be done in person at Canada’s National Ballet school or filmed. 

  • Assessed Class: $150

Audition for the Young Dancers Program - Intensive Ballet stream

This stream of part-time programming offers young dancers ages 9-17 structured ballet training with renowned dance educators, more training hours for dancers to develop their artistry and technique, and performance opportunities to showcase their achievements.

 

Auditions for the Intensive Ballet stream of the Young Dancers Program offers young dancers the opportunity to take part in two back-to-back dance classes at Canada’s National Ballet School. 

 

Students will participate in two dance classes—ballet and an additional movement style—and will have a chaperoned snack and activities break. Guests will not be permitted to view the audition classes. Prior dance experience is not required for children 12 and under.
