NBS Sharing Dance Day

NBS Sharing Dance

Celebrate the joy, creativity and community of dance

Each year, Canada’s National Ballet School commissions a Canadian artist to create a piece of choreography that embodies a thoughtful theme.

The 2023 NBS Sharing Dance Choreography, created by Kimberley Cooper, Eugene Baffoe, Tracee Smith and Roger Sinha, celebrates the power of collaboration and the vibrant diversity of Canadian dance artists. The original choreography was created in 2017 as a Canada 150 Signature Project, and we are excited to be remounting this work this year. Step-by-step instructional videos guide you through the choreography—whether you want to invest in learning and performing the full piece, or are exploring just a small portion of the material.

The choreography builds towards NBS Sharing Dance Day, a nationwide dance party bringing together tens of thousands of people in communities across the country. NBS Sharing Dance started as a flashmob in Toronto in 2010 and has grown over the years into an incredible celebration of the joy, creativity and community of dance from coast-to-coast-to-coast.

A broadcast of Sharing Dance Day will not be taking place this year, but we invite you to join in the Sharing Dance Celebrations by learning this year’s choreography with your classroom and members of your community! Use the choreography to learn about dance in a fun, physical and artistic way, while fostering new relationships together.

Our free resources are downloadable and can be implemented with minimal equipment and space. For additional support on how you can bring Sharing Dance Celebrations to your community, reach out to sharingdance@nbs-enb.ca.

Celebrate the community and diversity of Canadian dance artists through the remounted 2017 choreography. See how choreographers Kimberley Cooper, Eugene Baffoe, Tracee Smith and Roger Sinha come together at Canada's National Ballet School to share their unique dance styles and build this collaborative choreography from scratch.

The choreography features original music by Laura Silberberg-Sgroi remixed by Skratch Bastid and performed by the Afiara Quartet featuring Inuit throat singer Tiffany Ayalik. If you’d like to play the music track separately, click here to stream it.
