Spring Showcase 2024 will feature Serenade by George Balanchine and two pieces by NBS Alumni—Lay Dances, a new work by James Kudelka created specifically for NBS students, and Come In by Aszure Barton. See below for more information about each performance.

Lay Dances

A note from James Kudelka

For several years now, Mavis Staines has allowed me a place here at Canada’s National Ballet School where, through teaching and choreographing, I have been able to keep my hand in the development of a new generation of dancers. Mavis and I go back a long time, to the late 1960s, when she was one year ahead of me academically. As we ventured along our own paths, first as dancers, then as apprentices on the artistic teams, and finally as Artistic Directors, we managed to always be respected colleagues and mostly, because we are two of the last people still standing, old friends brought together through ballet but existing beyond it. On hearing of Mavis’ decision to retire after the 2024 Spring Showcase, I requested that I be included in her final choices of repertoire for the program. Working with the students on projects always takes me back to my own years at the school and each dance has always been autobiographical, while at the same time reflecting the changes in our world at large, and ballet in general.

This is a long way of saying I wish to dedicate Lay Dances to Mavis, in honour of her long, tireless custodianship of this unique institution, and with thanks for her loyalty and friendship. JK.
