NBS' unique one-year certificate gives students a detailed look at the science and skill of teaching dance, with a focus on classical ballet. The program offers flexibility to allow students to choose areas of focus within the program and delivers the essential information and practice required in developing teaching skills. In addition to academic coursework and personal dance classes, students benefit from practical hands-on teaching experience with recreational dance students and an opportunity to observe the training of professional dancers.
Personal skill development and understanding of classical technique is emphasized, allowing students to advance their own skill set from both a technical and artistic perspective. Students learn the fundamentals of anatomy, music, and ballet pedagogy as well as Benesh movement notation, personal conditioning, and the use of the voice in teaching.

During the virtual audition, candidates will participate in a one-hour ballet class. Following this class, each candidate will meet briefly, one-on-one, with the program manager for further discussion. Additionally, during the allotted audition timeframe, candidates may be asked to attend small, virtual, group sessions focused on assessing musicality.
Successful applicants will be invited to register for Stage 2 of the audition process held in April/May of 2022. Exact details to follow in February 2022. However, typically it requires the candidate to attend 3-4 days of on-site classes.
