About Sharing Dance
Sharing Dance is Canada’s National Ballet School’s flagship community outreach initiative offering free dance programs for all Canadians—to get healthy, active and artistically engaged. Featuring multifaceted programming and supported through a collection of free online resources, Sharing Dance includes:
- High-quality dance activities for children and youth—both in and out of the classroom.
- Health and wellness dance programs for seniors, focused specifically on improving quality of life and creating community.
- Sharing Dance Canada 2017, a nation-wide, engagement program culminating in multigenerational community performances on Sharing Dance Day, celebrating Canada’s 150th.
Increase access: Offer in- and out-of-classroom programs and activities encouraging children and youth—who may otherwise not have the opportunity to engage in dance activities—to develop healthier, more active habits through dance.
Improve movement: Help seniors and individuals prevent injury by managing physical, mental and emotional symptoms associated with age-related illnesses such as Parkinson’s disease and dementia.
Effect childhood development: Promote dance as a valuable strategy in youth engagement and development of social skills, self-confidence, and overall better physical health and education.
Provide health intervention: Have dance widely recognized and valued for its public health benefits and role in improving quality of life for all.
Use technology to scale: Make dance accessible to all Canadians through an interactive online platform, offering digital resources and support, livestreamed content, and forums for public involvement.
Support Research: Contribute to medical and scientific knowledge by supporting research to demonstrate the effectiveness of dance as a preventive and healthy activity.
